Turtle Rock Willow’s Cuvee Red Blend Paso Robles 2021 750ml
Description
Turtle Rock Willow’s Cuvee Blend Paso Robles 2021 750ml
The 2021 Willow’s Cuvee opens with an immediate cascade of blackberry preserve and sun-warmed blueberry aromas, complemented by fresh crushed sage and a whisper of cedar. As the wine breathes, subtle notes of graphite and wild fennel emerge, creating an intriguing aromatic tapestry that speaks to its Paso Robles terroir.
On the palate, the first sip delivers concentrated black cherry and ripe plum flavors that unfold with remarkable precision. The fruit character shows impressive depth without heaviness, allowing secondary notes of cracked black pepper, dried thyme, and cocoa nibs to develop across the mid-palate. A distinctive mineral thread—reminiscent of sun-baked limestone—weaves throughout, reflecting the unique calcareous soils of the westside Paso Robles vineyards where these grapes were meticulously grown.
The finish reveals itself gradually, with lingering notes of espresso, dried currants, and a subtle savory quality that invites the next sip. Fine-grained tannins provide structure while maintaining an elegant balance that allows this wine to be approachable now yet promises further development with cellaring.
Crafted by Don Burns, Turtle Rock’s founder and winemaker, this Rhône-style blend represents a thoughtful selection from the estate’s finest vineyard blocks. Burns, who honed his craft working alongside Saxum’s Justin Smith, brings that same attention to detail to his own limited-production wines. The 2021 Willow’s Cuvee—named for Burns’ daughter—continues the tradition of showcasing the distinctive character of Paso’s Willow Creek District through minimal intervention winemaking.
What distinguishes this blend is its remarkable purity and focus. Unlike many Paso blends that lean into power and extraction, Willow’s Cuvee achieves intensity through precision rather than weight. The wine undergoes native yeast fermentation and aging in French oak puncheons, allowing the vineyard character to remain at the forefront.
The 2021 vintage in Paso Robles benefited from a relatively cool growing season by regional standards, allowing for extended hang time and development of nuanced flavors while maintaining fresh acidity—qualities that shine through in this bottling. Production remains intentionally small, with approximately 300 cases made.
Pair this exceptional blend with herb-crusted lamb chops, wild mushroom risotto, or for a sublime experience, alongside a board of aged cheeses like Manchego or Comté. While drinking beautifully now, this wine will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 7-10 years.
Turtle Rock’s Willow’s Cuvee exemplifies the new generation of Paso Robles winemaking—thoughtful, terroir-driven, and crafted with restraint that allows the unique character of this special growing region to take center stage.
